Johnson & Johnson Gets Controversial Drug Approved

copyright free Pills.jpg

Johnson & Johnson has gotten approval for a drug that has a strong potential to be abused. Their opioid, Nucynta, was reported this week to have attained approved status by Medical News Today. Concerns of its approval surround the fact that opioid users have a high potential to become physically and psychologically addicted to the drug.

Nucynta is classified as a schedule II drug. This class of drugs is considered to have a strong potential for abuse, but medically necessary under certain conditions. Other drugs in this category are oxycodone, morphine and cocaine.

Nucynta is an extended release oral medication which is used to manage chronic pain in those 18 and over. While the drug is designed to be taken only twice daily by those with chronic pain that ranges from moderate or severe, abusers may take this drug more often. Due to the extended release of the drug, overdose may happen more easily if the drug is taken more often than recommended.
