Preventing Addictions

Unfortunately, many times, a loved one actually is enabling addiction through their well intentioned desire to help the addict or alcoholic. How does this occur?
Not too long ago seatbelts were for sissies, AIDS was considered a death sentence for gays, and smokers lit up and turned to their neighbor and said, “Would you like a cigarette?” Today our attitudes on these issues are profoundly different.

Primary prevention refers to efforts to keep drug abuse from happening in the first place, and is always the preferable approach. Regrettably, our society’s efforts at primary prevention of drug abuse have met with little success. This article [from a book chapter] will examine the failure of existing approaches and will suggest new directions that may be more effective.

    Addresses the questions:
    1.  Why do young people drink and get drunk?
    2.  What are we trying to prevent with prevention programs?
    3.  What are the different strategies of prevention?
    4.  What is the evidence of their effectiveness?
    5.  What strategies are most politically popular?
    6.  What conclusions can we draw for future programs?
