Non 12- Step Support GroupsThe Addiction Treatment Alternatives Directory (ATAD) is an international listing of professionally based services for those struggling with an addiction, unhealthy habits or other unwanted repetitive behavior that fits the definition of addiction. This is not to imply that 12-step based programs don't help people but rather that the time has come to acknowledge and make available treatment for addiction information for many people who have not benefited by traditional 12-step methods, or for what ever reason, do not anticipate that the 12-step method (originally developed by Alcoholics Anonymous) to be a method of choice for their recovery or for someone they are advising.
You may be surprised at the wide range of diverse theoretical approaches, intensity of treatments, lengths of treatment, beliefs about the underlying causes of addiction as well as definitions of success based on the definition of addiction. Services listed here for treatment for addiction are both free and fee based and include private-for-profit services and not-for-profit services. This Addiction Treatment Alternatives Directory includes solo private practitioners, clinics, rehabs, and support groups. Please keep in mind that the inclusion of a program or individual does not represent a formal endorsement by AddictionInfo.org or Marc F. Kern, Ph.D.
Criteria for being listed here on the ATAD are rather loose and have not been verified in all cases. All listings
are voluntary and often initiated by the Listee. Since the goal of this directory is to put forth a directory that distinguishes its services from traditional 12-step based treatment for addiction. Requirements for being listed include no active encouragement of 12-step, no bait and switch, no step classes, and essentially no mention of 12-step. Further, there are no religious or spiritual requirements, no cults such as Narcanon which is owned by Scientology that doesn’t focus on an accurate definition of addiction, and no detoxification only facilities will be listed unless they are free from any coercion to be involved with a 12-step treatment, principles or meetings.

Private practitioners and clinics that specialize in providing treatment for addiction services other than the traditional 12-step based methods, can include psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers and other licensed and unlicensed professionals. Their philosophy can include "Harm Reduction" principles as well as moderation and abstinence only goals. In general, non 12-step treatment does not include involvement in AA, NA, CA, GA, OA. Some, but not all of these programs listed, are based on research (which addresses the full definition of addiction) that has been replicated in blind tests. Programs listed here may or may not include medication, herbs, and forms of eastern medicine practices such as acupuncture and nutrient based programs.

"This impressive Addiction Treatment Alternatives Directory represents a significant step forward for both the professional community and potential clients seeking effective addiction treatment.
Thanks to the Internet and this database directory, evidence-based addiction treatment providers can now more readily see, with this database, that they are not alone in providing effective clinical services. It will help them collaborate, expand their referral network, and more easily share and compare their own therapy with what others are offering.
For the first time, consumers of treatment services will have a substantially better understanding of available services, easily identify evidence-based treatment providers, and gain more knowledge about the range of therapeutic and complementary services available.
Moreover, addicted clients will no longer be handicapped by their own limited knowledge, or that of their advisers, as to what works best with various clients and circumstances. Few physicians, ministers, or even mental health professionals have much training in addiction counseling or know of the array of effective treatment options to the traditional AA model.
Marc Kern, the architect of this impressive database, is a superb educator and therapist. I first met Dr. Kern when I enrolled as a student in one of his community workshops on addiction and was greatly impressed with his intelligence, creativity, and clearly articulated understanding of addiction dynamics and recovery. Possessing highly developed teaching and counseling skills, he expands his leadership in the addiction treatment field. Recently I invited Marc to co-lead one of my UCLA courses on addiction and to write an important chapter in one of my books (Addiction Recovery Tools). I can personally attest to the value of his vision about this AA Alternatives Directory and applaud his efforts to bring this to others in the field, a creative innovation that will benefit many."
