Three Signs You Know You're Addicted to Sugar
When sugar is consumed, the body releases feel-good chemicals into the brain, which leads the average person to want more.
If you find comfort in reaching for a sugary beverage in the middle of the work day or hope endlessly for something to satisfy your sweet tooth, you may have a sugar addiction.
Why Is Sugar Addictive?
There are a number of reasons why sugar is considered addictive. One of the main reasons is because neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin are released into the brain when sugar is consumed, giving the consumer the same feel-good reaction as alcohol or hard drugs, like cocaine. Over time, sugar consumption must occur for normal functioning.
Three Signs of Sugar Addiction
- Timed cravings. When you experience a sugar craving during the same time each day, it may be a sign of addiction. It's possible that you may have acquired a dependence on sugar to boost energy or overcome emotional slumps.
- Withdrawal symptoms. Nausea, fatigue, headaches, irritability and anxiety may be experienced when you attempt to cut back on sugar intake. Experiencing these symptoms is one of the clearest signs that you may be addicted to sugar. Consuming sugar to ease the symptoms will only increase dependence.
- Increased tolerance. While some people may only need half of a packet of sugar to sweeten a drink, another may need two full packets. As use increases, so does tolerance, and we pursue sweeter and sweeter things. If you need sugar in everything you drink and eat, or you go out of your way to obtain it, this could be a sign of a loss of control.
Overcoming Sugar Addiction

- Keep sugar and sugary products out of the house.
- Eat enough whole food to satisfy your hunger.
- Eat three meals a day to maintain a healthy blood sugar level.
- Learn to identify and manage cravings.
