PTSD and Alcoholism

ptsd.jpg

Virtually every study conducted on the subject has found a definite link between Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and alcoholism.

About.com said one such study found that 52% of men and 28% of women with PTSD also have an alcohol problem. Among non-PTSD sufferers, those numbers sink to 25% and 10%, respectively.

There are several theories as to why this is so:

High-Risk Theory
This theory states that the substance abuse occurs before the PTSD, and that using alcohol puts people at greater risk for a traumatic event.

Self-Medication Theory
PTSD sufferers use alcohol to deal with the stress that PTSD brings.

Susceptibility Theory
About.com writes:
The susceptibility theory suggests that there is something about alcohol and drug use that may increase a person's risk for developing PTSD symptoms after experiencing a traumatic event.

Shared Vulnerability Theory
People may have a genetic vulnerability towards both substance abuse and PTSD.

Research has found evidence that each theory may be correct. Regardless of why, people with PTSD must guard against alcoholism, and vice versa.
