Definition of a Sex Addict

Despite the increase in publicity of sex addiction and more people seeking treatment for it, the mental health community is split on whether it is an actual addiction.

While they argue, others are coming up with definitions of what exactly sex addiction is. SexHelp.com offers its opinion.

Sexual addiction is defined as any sexually-related, compulsive behavior which interferes with normal living and causes severe stress on family, friends, loved ones, and one's work environment.

In most cases, the addict's life revolves around sex, doing whatever it takes to continue their destructive behavior. The compulsion simply dominates every aspect of the person's life, sacrificing friends, family, work and everything else.

The problem for therapists is that the addiction manifests itself differently in each person. Some of the behaviors of the sex addict include compulsive masturbation, compulsive sexual relationships, pornography, prostitution, exhibitionism, voyeurism, indecent phone calls, child molesting, incest, rape and violence.

Whether the mental health experts classify sex addiction as a true addiction, it is clear it is affecting people in an adverse way.
