Sex and the City star Kristin Davis has revealed the extent of her struggle with alcoholism, and candidly reveals how she didn't think she would live past 30, and that alcoholism runs in her family.

Kristin Davis:

This is going to sound strange, but I really didn't think I would pass 30.

I don't know why or whatever, I just didn't.

That's a very weird thing to say, I'm sorry. I don't know.

Maybe it's because I was drinking so much as a youth.

I drank a lot when I was a teenager and I don't drink any more, because that's when I thought, you know, I'm gonna end up a car wreck. I just had a fatalistic view of the whole situation at that point.

It's very hard to say a simple answer as to why.

Alcoholism is a genetically predisposed disease and it does run in my family.

I also think I felt like a misfit. I was in the South, everybody was blonde. I just didn't feel like I fitted in. It was sort of my way of fitting.

I don't think the drinking was really a rebellious thing, because I was still a straight-A student.

What made me stop?

[Davis was 22 years old when she became teetotal.]

I realised it was not going to end well. I got into the acting programme, it was very challenging, I was hungover and I wasn't doing so well in my classes.

I thought, 'Do you know what? It's going to be one or the other. I can't really have both.'

Nowadays I would say chocolate and coffee has taken over.

Lattes. It's funny because I find myself thinking, 'I've got to have a latte.' I have a limit of two.
